Hi, I am Anne Mirtschin, a secondary teacher who teaches commerce and IT. In 2007, I am teaching grade 3 through to year 12 IT. My passions include the use of web2.0, podcasting and multimedia including digital animations. I teach at Hawkesdale prep to year 12 College, a small country school in Western Victoria, Australia. This year our school has been granted a rich picture case studies grant where we will work with grade 6 students on pod/vidcasting and the volunteers at the Penshurst Volcano Discovery Centre to produce podcasts for the centre and surrounding volcanic district, called Kanawinka.

 Students talked about a number of options but voted on sending a cockatoo. A cockatoo (toy) was purchased and has been sent away together with letters, photos etc to Israel. Victorian Schools Cycling Championship 2014

On Sunday 17th August, Josh Tanner and James Coomber competed in the Mountain Bike event at the You Yang Ranges. Both boys competed in tough categories and were focused and well prepared.

This was Josh’ first competitive mountain bike race and he was very impressive. James competed in his second solo mou8ntain bike event against 3 national champions in an age group above his category. This was a big step and challenge for him and he stayed with a group of 3 riders for the whole race with a sprint between the 3 of thme to the finish linke. James placed in the top 10 our o 20 riders – a fantastic result. Well done boys!

On Wednesday 20th Auguas, Caitlin Morden, James Coomber and Ross Anderson competed in the road event in Ballarat. The icy weather conditions made for a tough race but all 3 students improved on last year’s races with James and Caitlin making it through to the State final in Bendigo in October. A great effort from all riders. All the best, James and Caitlin in the state final races.

Let’s Stop Bullying

Year 7 students spent time discussing the issues relating to bullying and how to prevent it as part of National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. Year 9/10 Girls Health elective continued the conversations.

Some of the students involved have created movies to share with others and will take part in a global competition for DigitalID – 21st Century Learning Below are their videos. Please take time to view them. They would love feedback which you can do in the form of a comment.

Mrs Gow has made it through to the finalist stage for the Victorian Education Excellence Awards – one of the Education Department’s highest awards – the Lindsay Thompson Fellowship. The Gala Awards dinner will take place on May 16th at the Crown and the winner will be announced there.

In the meantime, our school and community has been asked to write a tribute to her in the form of notes, images and videos. Some of these will be published on the Dept of Education’s website and some will be featured at the awards dinner.

School ANZAC Day Traditions

Anzac Day is a special day on the calendar for Australian and New Zealand residents. It is commemorated with a public holiday on April 25th. Our school has been involved in a number of activities to also celebrate this event.

Our annual school Anzac Day service was held this afternoon with all students and staff, together with some community members in attendance.

Our program went as follows:-

  1.  Welcome and Introduction by our Assistant Principal, Mr Ralph
  2. ANZAC Requiem (In memory of the Fallen): by Sarah, one of our student leaders
  3. P-6 students, then 7-12 STUDENTS – Laying of flowers – symbolic of the beauty that exists in the world around us, and of respect to those who are no longer able to enjoy that beauty
  4. Caitlyn (a student leader) read The Ode (a traditional element of every ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day ceremony)
  5. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
    Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
    At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.

A special Dawn Service will take place in Hawkesdale at 6:00am tomorrow. The flowers will all be taken to the Reflection Space for this ceremony.

Further activities:-
Students in a number of classes baked Anzac Biscuits.  The wonderful aroma wafted through the corridors and they tasted even better than they smelt (or looked). See one of the popular recipes

Student Investiture Ceremony

Our student investiture ceremony is always a wonderful day for celebrating the leadership roles taken on by our student body.  This took place on Tuesday March 4th during period 2.

School captains, house captains, bus captains, the student leadership team and the Beacon ambassadors proudly came to the front and were acknowledged for the important roles that they take on in our school and as always were reminded that they should “Dare to Achieve”
