We are a small country college with an enrolment of 260. We are a Prep to Year 12 community so our students are aged between 5 and 18 years old. There is something really special about our P12 School. The students all know each other; they mix inside and outside classes and the college has quite a family feel about it. It is quite gorgeous to see the “big kids” lined up with the “little kids” at the canteen, or the different ages mixing outside in the yard. Looking out the window and seeing half a dozen preps chatting merrily to the year 12’s, is quite the norm at our college.

Our college is in a small country town called Hawkesdale, and we are conveniently situation in the Great South West of Victoria. Our community is in close proximity to the beautiful Great Ocean Road and all its natural attractions and in reasonable proximity to the beautiful Grampians National Park, to the north. Over winter weekends our students are involved in local netball and football competitions, hockey, horse riding, golf and other sporting pursuits. In the summer months they amuse themselves with cricket, tennis, swimming and lots and lots of barbeques.

The majority of our families come off farms. We have a mix of beef, sheep and dairy farms in our community. In the actual township of Hawkesdale, we have a Post office, rural hardware store a hotel and of course, the College. The community members have to travel to Hamilton, Koroit, Port Fairy or Warrnambool, to do their weekly grocery shopping or business. Buying enough groceries to keep you going for at least a week, is quite the norm. Some families live in town and travel into the bigger centres to work. The majority of our students travel to school on buses. The students travel from small towns and outlying areas – Macarthur, Penshurst, Woolsthorpe, Warrnambool and Koroit. Our school motto is “Opening Doors to the Future” and we believe we certainly do that.

Many of our students begin their school lives here in prep and finish up 13 years later, in year 12. At the year 12 Graduation evening, the audience is made up of parents, students, family members and staff who may have taught those graduates way back in prep.

Welcome to our elearning journey at Hawkesdale P12 College – a country college with a country heart. A school that opens doors to the future and to the globe.

Our school provides a safe and caring environment that supports the development of our students to their full potential academically, socially and personally, and the realisation of their roles as responsible members of their community.  The Hawkesdale educational community is a partnership between parents, students and the school.

Hawkesdale P12 College offers the local and surrounding communities a primary and secondary education on one campus. The school was established in 1994 when the Hawkesdale Secondary College and Hawkesdale Primary School merged. Hawkesdale P12 College is a Prep to Year 12 school situated mid-way between Hamilton and Warrnambool in the South Western District of Victoria.  The school enrolment fluctuates between 240 and 300 students.

Our school is dedicated to offering all students a supportive, creative and challenging education.  We offer a strong literacy and numeracy program in the Early Years to establish basic skills and knowledge, a diverse curriculum in the Middle Years that seeks to engage and inspire student learning, and broad options in the Later Years to maximize post school opportunities.  We offer a large range of VCE subjects and students can also undertake VCAL and have the opportunity to access a number of VET courses.

LOTE Chinese is a core subject from Prep to Year 8, an elective in Years 9 and 10 and is also offered at VCE level. Secondary students are offered the opportunity to participate in our Beijing sister school student exchange biannually in addition to LOTE network study initiatives.

Our Global Web 2.0 program is recognised internationally. Student/computer ratio is excellent. In addition we have interactive whiteboards in four teaching classrooms as well as the library.

The school has developed the Skills for Living program, which includes a focus on getting along, organisation, leadership and teamwork. Other extension programs include: Public Speaking, Duke of Edinburgh, Advance, CFA, Camps and Outdoor Education and Sports.

    Hi Matt,

My name is Martha Siede, I am the Executive Producer for the radio programme, “The Conversation… with Dave Hammond”.

I am writing to ask if someone would be available for an interview on the programme, by our host, Dave Hammond.. The programme goes out Nationally through the Community Radio Satellite Network and is taken by around 60 or more stations on Sunday night’s from 9pm-12 midnight.

I thought our listeners would benefit from hearing about what your school is doing for ‘International Friendship Day’.

The interview would be around 20 minutes, sometimes longer and will be focused on how to be a better person.

Would they be available on Sunday 1/08/2010 at 11:05pm (Sydney time)? The interview will be via telephone and so I will require a ‘landline’ phone number and a mobile number for backup.

I’m excited about the opportunity. Feel free to contact me and ask questions
